Things start to go sideways on the evening that the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter Judy plans to celebrate her birthday early with teen babysitter Mary Ellen while her parents are out of town on a case. I thought Annabelle Comes Home was so much fun to watch with all the different hauntings. Definitely the original Annabelle was the scariest out of the three in my opinion.
Gary Dauberman, who has penned several entries in The Conjuring universe, as well as IT, makes his directorial debut with the movie. James Wan, who directed the two main entries in the franchise, serves as a producer. What's especially appealing about this movie is that Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will make their return as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren for the first time since The Conjuring 2. Though, it's expected that their roles will be relatively small. However, the two are set to return once more in next year's The Conjuring 3, which is being directed by Michael Chaves, who made his directorial debut with The Curse of La Llorona.

Convinced it’s “a beacon for other spirits,” Lorraine attempts to warn Ed just before he almost gets run down by a semi-trailer. Dauberman also has a great deal of fun with the forbidden room and all its various, monstrous treasures. Little Judy, who seems to have picked up some of her mother's clairvoyance, is having trouble at school because of her parents' work and can't seem to make friends. Daniela is also quite touching, hoping to communicate with her dead father while blaming herself for his death; she's more than just a busybody poking around where she shouldn't be. And it's a welcome surprise to see Farmiga and Wilson back as the Warrens. All in all, everything clicks satisfyingly into place for a solid scarefest that's worth getting dolled up for.
Having seen a few clips from the film in the edit bay on the Warner Bros. lot, ComicBook.com can confirm Annabelle Comes Home does combine a bit of fun with a hefty amount of terror. "I really tried that, to do that with a bunch of the scares here," Dauberman said of keeping the audience on their toes with surprising scares. A ghost stabs a teen girl in the stomach; we hear crunching and when the girl falls to the floor, there is no wound. Unfortunately, that’s all the film is; it’s just an assortment of scary sequences for our trio of kids to make their way through and not much else. It relies a little too heavily on scenes where a spooky figure is standing in the background, unbeknownst to our protagonists, and by the fourth or fifth time this happens you want to yell, “Just turn the fuck around! ” Then there are the standard moronic actions of characters found in these types of films, who split up and explore the dark, spooky house on their own more often than members of the Scooby gang. Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren lock the possessed doll in the artifacts room in their house. But when the doll awakens the room’s evil spirits, it soon becomes an unholy night of terror for the couple’s 10-year-old daughter, her friends, and their young baby sitter.
The third installment of the Annabelle franchise and next step into the Conjuring horror movie universe, Annabelle Comes Home, has officially been given an R-rating by the MPAA. The film marks the directorial debut for Gary Dauberman, who previously scripted the previous Annabelle films. All The Conjuring movies are known for drawn-out scenes of suspense, dark atmospheres, and jump scares. Annabelle Comes Home takes this to the next level, capitalizing on slow-burn pacing and intense scenes. The tension is expertly crafted, with Dauberman cleverly using sound design, camera angles, and an incredible soundtrack to create a truly frightening experience.

Besides, the franchise is as strong as ever when it comes to those all important box office numbers. Last year’s The Nun is the highest grossing entry in the cinematic universe at the moment, while the recent Curse of La Llorona has so far taken in $121 million on a budget of just $9 million. Can Annabelle Comes Home sustain that momentum at the box office when it arrives in theaters on June 28th? Annabelle Comes Home centers on the Warrens, who are determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc. So, they opt to bring the possessed doll to their artifacts room at their home, and keep her locked up tight, placing her behind sacred glass and even going so far as to enlist a priest's holy blessing. Unfortunately, when they leave on a trip, a night of horror awaits as Annabelle is disturbed and the evil spirits in the room awaken, with their sights set on the Warrens' young daughter Judy and her unlucky babysitters.
In what is essentially a haunted-house film, Dauberman creates an atmosphere of incredible tension as the three young women tangle with spirits, ghosts and ghouls. Dauberman’s control over the camera and mastery of suspense is impressive, especially for a first-time director. But the film is strung too tightly, rarely breaking bad, denying the cathartic chaos one craves in this kind of film. Strangely, “Annabelle Comes Home” needs more jump scares — or maybe this jaded critic has just seen it all by now. Director Gary Dauberman clearly knows his way around the genre, having already written over a half-a-dozen horror flicks, and I will admit to having gooseflesh during several of the haunting sequences.

Nothing really happens for a really long time in this movie. With nearly all the action limited to an afternoon and a seemingly endless night of horror in the Warrens’ maze-like home, Dauberman gives himself a compact, confined space to work with. Annabelle Comes Home picks up as the Warrens cautiously transport the doll back to their home in an early scene that reveals the premise for all the mayhem that eventually ensues. After their car breaks down outside a cemetery on a dark, mist-enshrouded country road, Annabelle’s presence in the back seat rouses the dead from their graves.
The Conjuring started as the story of a haunted farmhouse in Rhode Island and grew into a series of spinoffs, prequels, and sequels, including The Nun and Annabelle. Annabelle Comes Home is the third installment in the Annabelle series and sees the Warrens take the possessed doll to their own home in an attempt to contain the evil entity. So, not only isAnnabelle Comes Homeinherently scary because of the creepy doll premise, but the film also includes traditional gore that may upset some viewers. But for those who are familiar with the horror genre, the visuals might not seem that problematic. To date, the six Conjuring universe movies have grossed $1.7 billion worldwide.
Unexpectedly, Mary Ellen’s friend Daniela shows up on the pretext of joining Judy’s birthday celebration, although she’s really pursuing her own agenda. Still grieving over the recent death of her father in a traffic accident, Daniela has come seeking spiritual reconnection with her dad, convinced that the Warrens’ paranormal expertise can provide guidance. She attempts to interpret their work by sneaking into the locked artifacts room after stealing the key from Ed’s study and proceeds to examine closely and even touch many of the tainted objects stored there for safekeeping. Where the plot lacks depth, it’s made up for in the skillfully crafted suspense.
